Butter Garlic Mushrooms
It's no surprise to anyone who knows anything about me that my favorite place to go out to eat is our local steakhouse. What might surprise you, though, is that I look forward to the simple side dish of mushrooms with garlic as much as the steak itself!
If you've ever had steakhouse mushrooms, then you know just what I mean, and you've probably wondered how they make them just so darn good. I did the same thing, and then I got tired of wondering and finally figured out how to make them at home!
This garlic mushroom recipe is as good as any steakhouse side dish, and incredibly easy to make in less than 15 minutes. And, for how simple and straightforward the ingredients are, you would not believe how complex the flavors become.
Let's get to it - I'll show you how to make the most amazing garlic mushrooms recipe you'll want to serve with everything!
What is a button mushroom?
Button mushrooms are the youngest form of the same variety of mushroom as cremini and portobello mushrooms. They are also known simply as white button mushrooms, or just white mushrooms, and are the least expensive, most popular variety of mushroom in the U.S.
Garlic Mushroom Recipe Ingredients
- Butter
- Olive oil
- Button mushrooms
- Salt
- Pepper
- Garlic
- Parsley
- Dried thyme
How to Make Garlic Mushrooms
- Rinse mushrooms and gently pat dry with a paper towel to remove any excess dirt. Trim any mushroom stems that are too long so your mushrooms are even.
- In a large pan over medium-high heat, add olive oil and butter, and allow the butter to melt.
- Once the butter melts, add mushrooms and season with salt and pepper.
- Cook for 5-7 minutes. Stir now and then, but not too often - you want the mushrooms to have time to brown and caramelize.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add garlic, thyme, and parsley to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
- Give the pan a good stir. Add to a serving dish and pour pan drippings over top.
- Sprinkle with remaining parsley for garnish, serve, and enjoy!
Tips for Making Garlic Mushrooms
- Be gentle when washing the mushrooms as they can be delicate, but don't avoid washing them - they're naturally a little dirty when buying them whole.
- Make sure the mushrooms are completely dry after washing them, or they won't crisp up properly and may even become soggy.
- You can slice the mushrooms if you prefer, or buy them sliced, but they are delicious and have more of a bite to the texture when left whole. If you want to slice them, try my Sauteed Garlic Mushrooms recipe instead.
- Only stir the pan now and then when caramelizing the mushrooms. If you stir too often, they won't brown properly.
- If you want to add a little something extra, sprinkle your butter garlic mushrooms with parmesan when serving. This little addition is so good!
- A little dash of Worcestershire sauce also adds a nice flavor if you're pairing the mushrooms with a dish like steak. Give it a try!
How long do cooked mushrooms last?
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-5 days in the refrigerator.
Can you freeze cooked mushrooms?
You can freeze cooked mushrooms! First allow them to cool, then divide them into portions if you wish - this makes it easier to grab the amount you want out of the freezer. Add them to freezer-safe bags or an airtight container and label with the date. Freeze for up to 6 months.
Recipe with Button Mushrooms FAQ
Garlic cooks much more quickly than the mushrooms will have time to caramelize. Because of this, it's better to first saute the mushrooms and allow them to brown and caramelize before adding the garlic, so the garlic has no chance of burning.
Mushrooms are very versatile and pair well with nearly every spice and herb, so you can season them according to the dish you're planning on serving. Garlic butter mushrooms tend to pair best with herbs like rosemary and thyme, but you can also try everything from dill to curry powder. It's easy to experiment and find your favorite flavors!
Mushrooms are one of the most complementary side dishes you can make - you can pair them with practically any meal. Serve them alongside steak, prime rib, burgers, chicken, pork, fish, or crab, and tweak the flavors according to the dish you're making. Try serving them alongside Oven Roasted Small Potatoes, Roasted Tomatoes, Air Fryer Asparagus Fries, or Corn Ribs.
