Best Button Mushrooms Recipe

One of my favorite side dishes to prepare for my family is a side of mushrooms. It is so easy to take plain white mushrooms and make them into one of the best side dishes for steak, pork chops, chicken, and more!

Sauteed garlic mushrooms are an easy and budget-friendly side dish you can whip up in minutes. They're so good, I've even convinced people who normally don't like mushrooms to try them - and they love them!

The best part about these garlic butter mushrooms is the garlic butter sauce. Made with butter, parsley, garlic, and thyme, this easy butter sauce is the perfect addition to earthy button mushrooms. I guarantee they will remind you of your favorite steakhouse mushrooms!

Give them a try with your favorite grilled steak recipe, and let me know what you think.

FAQs

How long should you saute mushrooms for?

Mushrooms should be sauteed for about 10 minutes, until they are nicely browned and caramelized. Make sure to keep an eye on them while cooking.

Are mushrooms keto-friendly?

Mushrooms are naturally low in carbs and therefore great for a keto meal plan. Along with the garlic butter sauce they're cooked in, these steakhouse mushrooms make a perfect side dish for keto recipes.

How do you saute mushrooms that are not soggy?

To keep your mushrooms from getting soggy, make sure they're as fresh as you can manage and cleaned well. Clean them by patting with a damp paper towel or by gently rinsing and drying thoroughly. Do not skip drying them, as mushrooms absorb water and this is a common way for them to become soggy.

What goes well with sauteed mushrooms?

Sauteed mushrooms pair well with beef, pork, and chicken of all kinds. Try serving them as a side dish for a steakhouse grilled steak, pork ribs, a holiday ham, or roast chicken. Whatever you try them with, I guarantee they will be delicious!

Can I prepare other mushrooms this way?

You can easily saute other types of mushrooms in garlic butter the same way as these sauteed garlic mushrooms; however, be mindful there will be a timing difference depending on what type of mushroom you're cooking with. Whenever I don't have button mushrooms on hand, I usually saute mixed mushrooms.

Is this dish gluten-free?

Sauteed garlic mushrooms have no ingredients containing gluten and therefore are perfect for a gluten-free meal plan!

Sauce for Mushrooms

The sauce for mushrooms I use in this recipe is a garlic butter sauce. To make it, you will need:

  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Garlic
  • Butter
  • Parsley
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Sauteeing mushrooms in this incredible garlic butter sauce gives them so much flavor! If you like, you can try adding additional fresh herbs as well, such as thyme. I find parsley and thyme to be a perfect combination for sauteed garlic mushrooms.

Recipe Tips

  • Clean and dry your mushrooms well. Drying them well is especially important, as if the mushrooms are at all wet they may become soggy and will not crisp up well. So make sure to dry them!
  • Try using other herbs of your choice with the garlic butter sauce. It is a great sauce to change up and try new seasonings with! You can also use dried herbs in place of fresh, though I find fresh parsley adds a ton of flavor more than dried.

How to Store Cooked Mushrooms

Store cooked mushrooms in the refrigerator or the freezer. To store mushrooms in the fridge, add to an airtight container or sealed plastic bag with the air pushed out for up to 4-5 days.

How to Freeze Cooked Mushrooms

To freeze cooked mushrooms, first allow them to cool. Once cooled enough, place them on a baking sheet and add to the freezer until frozen solid, about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Then, transfer to store them in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag. I like to portion them out into smaller freezer bags so I can take them out to use in portions.

Label with the freezing date, then store for up to 6 months. When ready to enjoy, allow them to thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat on the stove.

How to Reheat Cooked Mushrooms

The best way to reheat cooked mushrooms is to add them to a pan over low to medium heat on the stove. You can reheat in the microwave, but I like the extra crispness heating them over the stove ensures.
