My family asks me for these air fryer mushrooms every chance they get, and I don't blame them. After trying them just once, they became such a hit in my household I make them constantly. Air fried mushrooms are, in my opinion, the best way to prepare mushrooms.
Try them as an appetizer or as a side dish for dishes like prime rib, burgers, and steak. You will savor every bite!

FAQs
First prepare mushrooms for air frying by cleaning and cutting them, then coat them with egg, flour, and the spiced breadcrumb mixture. Then, for a single batch, air fry mushrooms for 7 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Air fry mushrooms at a temperature of 360°F. This is the ideal temperature for cooking your mushrooms to perfection while creating the perfect golden brown exterior.
You need mush less oil to fry in an air fryer than you do using traditional frying methods. Simply spray the inside of your air fryer with a light coating of oil.
Use oil with a high smoke point for air frying, such as extra light olive oil, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil. Do not use a non-stick spray such as Pam, as non-stick sprays include additives that may damage your air fryer.
What kind of mushrooms should I use?
You can use any kind of mushroom you like best, but baby bella portobello mushrooms work perfectly for this dish. Other options include button mushrooms and morel mushrooms.
Mushroom Seasoning
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- smoked paprika
- Italian seasoning
- salt and pepper
Air fryer mushrooms use a simple seasoning for mushrooms including garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper. This is an amazing combination that gives the mushrooms so much flavor!

How to Clean Mushrooms
To clean mushrooms, wipe any excess dirt away from them using a damp paper towel.
Do not place mushrooms in water or under running water as they will absorb it and become mushy. Simply pat and rub them down with a damp paper towel to remove any dirt.
How to Cut Mushrooms
For making air fryer mushrooms, you want mushrooms cut into wedges, not slices. Slices do not fry well and will not give you the desired results. To cut mushrooms into wedges, follow these instructions:
- Cut each mushroom into quarters.
- Cut each quarter in half.
- One mushroom will equal 8 wedge pieces.

Can I use already sliced mushrooms?
Pre-sliced mushrooms will not work well for making air fried mushrooms as they are usually cut into smaller pieces and not wedges. Wedges work best for frying, so it's better to cut the mushrooms yourself.
How to Air Fry Mushrooms
- Add flour to a plate. Whisk eggs in a bowl. In a separate bowl, combine breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper.
- Clean and slice mushrooms into wedges. Coat mushrooms in flour, then dunk them in eggs. Finally, toss in the spiced breadcrumb mixture to coat completely.
- Arrange mushrooms on a plate or other flat surface. Spray with olive oil spray.
- Place ⅓ of the mushrooms in your air fryer. Fry at 360°F for 7 minutes and repeat with the remaining two batches to fry all mushrooms.
- Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Try to cut your mushrooms into relatively the same size so they cook evenly.
- Air fry in 3 batches to ensure the mushrooms cook evenly. If you try to cook them all at once, they won't fry properly. Leave enough room between the mushrooms so the hot air can circulate.
- Cook time may vary depending on the size of your air fryer. Larger air fryers cook more quickly than smaller ones.
Dipping Sauce for Mushrooms
Serve air fryer mushrooms with dipping sauces such as:
Keto Instructions
Mushrooms themselves are keto-friendly, so as long as you use a breadcrumb substitute, these air fried mushrooms can easily be made low carb.
To make these air fryer mushrooms keto, use a keto breadcrumb substitute, such as:
- Ground pork rinds
- Ground nuts, such as almonds
- Keto breadcrumbs
- Psyllium husk
- Almond flour
Gluten-Free Instructions
For gluten-free fried mushrooms, use gluten-free flour instead of all-purpose flour.
Vegan Instructions
To make these fried mushrooms vegan, leave out the eggs and instead use an egg substitute such as a flax egg. You can make a single flax egg by mixing 1 Tablespoon of flaxseed meal with 3 Tablespoons of water.
