Green Beans Recipe

I love green beans! They're nutritious, delicious, and easy to grow or find cheap at the store. When I was young I spent many an afternoon out in the vegetable garden, reaching up high in the climbing bean vines to gather bucket after bucket of tender green beans.

Even now, with a house and family of my own, I love sharing fresh, delicious summer beans for dinner! But as life got busier, I started to need a faster recipe- which is when I came up with this green bean Instant Pot recipe. By using a quick cooker, the steaming is done for you, in less time than you could imagine!

And by less time, I mean 0 minutes. That's right- this steamed green bean recipe cooks the beans in 0 minutes, and all that's left is a quick Instant Pot saute in garlic butter!

Green Beans Instant Pot Tips

  • This is a French green bean recipe, but it can be made with string beans, too! Just set the pressure cooker to 1 minute instead of 0 and cut the stems off the string beans first.
  • This steamed green beans recipe comes with its own seasoning in the form of garlic butter, but feel free to change it up! I also love adding a splash of lemon or a dash of chili powder!
  • The great thing about this recipe is you don't need to use a steamer basket. This green bean dish is cooked directly in the water!

Green Bean Recipes FAQs

How long do you cook beans in a pressure cooker?

Green beans take extremely little time to cook in a pressure cooker! For green beans with a little snap left, cook for 0 minutes. For softer beans, or if you're using thicker beans like string beans, pressure cook for 1 minute.

Do you pressure cook beans on high or low?

When choosing a setting for pressure cooking green beans, set them to high pressure. This will very quickly cook them all the way through without risking overcooking them and turning them brown. That's what makes this green bean recipe easy!

What can I add to green beans for flavor?

For more flavorful green beans, my favorite addition is garlic butter! Just saute minced garlic in butter for a few minutes, then toss the beans in the garlic butter and add salt and pepper. It's fast, easy, and delicious!

Can you overcook green beans?

You can absolutely overcook green beans, and mushy, brown beans are a good way to think you don't like green beans! Cooking them only just long enough that they cook through is key to bright, colorful, perfectly cooked beans. Pressure cooking them for 0 minutes essentially means that the pressure cooker pressurizes and heats up, then instantly releases pressure- perfect for thin, delicate beans!

Sauteing Green Beans

If you're using an Instant Pot as a pressure cooker, then you're probably familiar with the saute mode button! This setting is incredibly handy and means less dishes for later, letting you cook everything in the same pot.

But if you don't have a pressure cooker with a preset Saute setting, never fear! Set the pressure cooker to any heat setting aside from high and it will do the same thing, so long as you don't add the lid.
