Korean Cream Cheese Garlic Bread

When I first made Korean cream cheese garlic bread, I knew it was going to be a hit with my family... but I never could have anticipated just how obsessed with it they would be!

I personally can't get enough of this easy cream cheese garlic bread recipe, and recommend it to everyone as a fun side dish, especially over the holiday season.

The crisp, crunchy outside - complete with a garlic butter custard - makes for the perfect bite, while the middle is soft, creamy, and deliciously cheesy. This is a side dish recipe everyone will go wild for, so make extra!

That's easy to do, too - this recipe takes only 15 minutes to make using store-bought rolls. If you want to make your own rolls, you can, but the fact you can use store-bought rolls is what makes this recipe for cream cheese garlic bread so easy and versatile!

FAQs

What is Korean cream cheese garlic bread?

Korean cream cheese garlic bread, or six-piece garlic bread (육쪽마늘빵 [yugjjogmaneulppang]), is a sweetened version of garlic bread. It is made using a milk bun or brioche roll, topped with garlic butter sauce, and has a sweetened cream cheese filling. Cream cheese garlic bread is a type of pull-apart bread, sliced into sections for easy eating. It has been a part of South Korean street food cuisine for a long time, but saw international popularity in 2020 after becoming a feature of restaurants throughout the country. What is the difference between Korean cream cheese garlic bread and regular garlic bread?

The garlic bread most common in America is an Italian-American recipe, typically using sliced bread or a sliced baguette, topped with garlic butter and toasted until crispy. Korean sweet garlic bread, however, uses a soft bun such as a milk bun or brioche roll, and is filled with a sweet cream cheese filling in addition to garlic butter sauce on top. It is stuffed, then baked.

What does Korean cream cheese garlic bread taste like?

Korean cream cheese garlic bread has a rich and sweet-and-savory taste. It is a rich, buttery and garlicky bread, finished with sweetened cream cheese, which gives it a perfect balance of savory and sweet flavors. The texture of the bread is unique, too, with a crunchy exterior and soft custard filling.

What kind of rolls should I use for cream cheese garlic bread?

Use rich, soft rolls, such as milk buns or brioche. Large dinner rolls that are at least 5 to 6 inches wide work best.

Can I use store-bought rolls?

You can use store-bought rolls to make Korean cream cheese garlic bread, or make your own if you wish! Try these Korean Bread Rolls (roll-ppang) or Japanese Milk Bread Rolls if you're making your own at home.

How to Make Korean Cream Cheese Garlic Bread

  1. Begin by baking dinner rolls from homemade dough, or by placing store-bought rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Heat oven to 350°F. Add softened cream cheese to a bowl and mix using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Add sugar and mix through; finally, add heavy cream and beat until smooth.

  2. Add sweetened cream cheese mixture to a piping bag or a plastic bag with one corner cut out.

  3. Cut dinner rolls into 6 to 8 equal wedges, but do not cut all of the way through the bread. You do not want to cut it apart! Once sliced open, pipe the cream cheese filling into the rolls enough to fill each slice.

  5. Dip filled rolls in the garlic butter mixture to coat the top. Let it sink into the rolls. You want them to soak up the flavor of the garlic butter custard.

  6. Place the rolls on your prepared baking sheet and, optionally, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake for 5-10 minutes until golden brown on top.

Garlic Butter Custard

Garlic butter custard makes the best garlic butter for bread! Because it uses a little bit of milk and egg, it creates a creamy garlic sauce that gives the rolls their crunchy golden brown crust. Regular garlic butter won't work as well for this recipe, so make sure you don't skip the milk and egg.

Gluten-Free Instructions

The only glutenous ingredient in this recipe is the bread rolls themselves. If you swap out the rolls for gluten-free dinner rolls, you can make gluten-free cream cheese garlic bread easily. You want them to be as soft as possible, so I recommend these Gluten-Free Pull-Apart Dinner Rolls.

Recipe Tips

  • Do not cut completely through the rolls. The bread needs to stay together, so only cut through enough to fill them with the cream cheese mixture.
  • Dunk the bread into the garlic butter custard mixture and allow it to soak. This will give you the most flavor and the perfect golden brown crust.
